The Kawa Zamurabawe cooperative began its operation in 2015, with 82 producers members. Located in the Bururi province, the coop now processes the cherries from 801 small holders located on 6 hills surrounding the washing station: Musenyi, Muheka, Karambi, Rubirizi, Nyacambuko and Kanyinya. This region is known for its cooler and dryer climates, compared to the northern growing regions of the country.
When coffee seeds were first introduced by the Germans in the 1930s, Bururi growers refused to surrender to the obligation of growing coffee trees on their land. Instead, they resisted by pouring boiling water on the trees until authorities believed that coffee production was impossible and not adapted to their terroir. Hence, coffee production is relatively new in the area but we found on our last visit that the cup quality was high and that the growers were very invested in their practices. This coop is also certified organic.
